Coin collecting takes many forms. Design and size of the coin, affordability, and availability are all factors in what series a collector may choose to focus on. Dollars are one of the most popular denominations to collect. Though Presidential Dollars seem to lead the group, Morgan Dollars and Peace Dollars are a close second and third if one considers 20th and 19th century coins. There are other series as well. Franklin Half Dollars, Washington Quarters, Roosevelt Dimers, Mercury Dimes--there are many choices.
Though both coins are beautiful with a rich history, it is much easier and much less expensive to collect a full set of peace dollars. The Morgan dollars had a much longer issue period, and there are some very scarce dates in the series including the 1889-CC and the 1893-S to name a few.
Collecting a set of Franklin half dollars in circulated condition is an easy task. Even a complete set of the coins in uncirculated condition is relatively inexpensive.
Washington Quarters, Standing Liberty Quarters, Roosevelt Dimes, Mercury Dimes, and other silver issues are also highly collected.
There are choices to be made. What do you like? What can you afford? Are you helping a child build a collection? Are you considering your purchases as an investment for future appreciation? Whatever you choose, collecting U.S. coins is a rewarding hobby that can be enjoyed a lifetime.
